The Military Power of the United States of America Department Of Defense The US military is one of the largest militaries in terms of number of personnel. It draws its manpower from a large pool of volunteers; although conscription has been used in the past in various times of both war and peace, it has not been used since 1972. As of 2010, the United States spends about 2 billion annually to fund its military forces, constituting approximately 43 percent of world military expenditures (As of 2009). The US armed forces as a whole possess large quantities of advanced and powerful equipment, which gives them significant capabilities in both defense and power projection. Department of the Air Force As of 2009Air National Guard; and 370 Air Force Reserve); approximately 180 unmanned combat air vehicles, 2130 air-launched cruise missiles, and 450 intercontinental ballistic missiles. The USAF has 330159 personnel on active duty, 68872 in the Selected and Individual Ready Reserves, and 94753 in the Air National Guard as of September 2008.
